A predictable fairy tale about love and loss, this is in my mind the best film in Baz Luhrmann’s “the red curtain trilogy.” A Spectacular, (spectacular) musical montage melody film it is everything which is wonderfully opulent about Hollywood cinema. Filled with crazy dances and incredible outfits when the plot fails the stunning visuals will more then take up the slack.
This is a true example of a film which is stronger then the sum of it’s parts. I am often not a Nicole Kidman Fan but she is captivating as Satine. Ewan McGregor is as always great, but the best performance for me comes from Richard Roxburgh as the Duke. He is so wonderfully seedy and insidious that he is a total joy to watch.
A great film for a rainy night, or a perfectly sunny day. I love this film and often drink excessive amounts while watching it because I find it totally sad even though I have seen it many times.
